Pouring a golden straw colour with a generous frothy head that sticks to the sides of the glass all the way down, the Redhook Long Hammer IPA is fresh and subtle in both aroma and avour. Make no mistake, subtle doesn’t mean uninteresting. In this case it means less full-on malt and hop than many of the supercharged IPAs that are coming out the US craft beer scene. The Long Hammer has been dry hopped with Cascade hops (that means hops have been added right at the end of the fermentation process) and the result is a beautiful aroma of light pine, citrus and oral notes. In the taste, that citrus element is more emphatic and leads to a lingering bitter hop nish. With caramel malts in the mix, there is a balancing sweetness to that bitterness but those Cascade hops still really shine. At 6.5% the ABV is perhaps a little high for your average session ale, but everything else about this much-loved American beer makes for a highly drinkable, most enjoyable IPA. We’re having ours with some local Thai takeaway tonight – it’s the perfect match for spicy food.
