Italy | Imperial Stout | 8.20%
Named for the Italian composer whose birthplace is also the home of the Ducato brewery, this stout has all the drama of a full orchestra and choir going hell for leather on the Verdi requiem (we are nothing if not culture vultures here at Beer Days). Pouring deep, velvety black with a dense tan head, the aroma mirrors the colour with a bouquet of dark chocolate, licorice, and espresso. Same goes with the flavour where you’ll find more chocolate, coffee, a peppery, roasted bitterness, and – in a literally spine-tingling finale – a warming chilli kick at the finish. We love finishing a beer in a hot flush – it just lines you up so neatly for your next one. Just remember though, at 8.2 % you won’t want to be conducting anything more than a rambling conversation.
