USA | Abbey Dubbel | 9%
The Brother David in question is not a cloistered Belgian monk from ye olden days. He is in fact David “Big Daddy” Keene of the famed Toronado Pubs and something of a craft beer legend in his native Cali, and beyond. Together with Anderson Valley Brewing, he has created this award-winning ale inspired by the classic Dubbels of Belgium. And we’re not gonna lie, we let out a couple of ‘hallelujahs’ upon first trying this beauty. The Abbey yeasts produce the classic fruity aroma and there’s plenty of toffee and raisin in there too. On the palate it’s all chocolate and candied and dried fruits balanced by a toasted, nutty character, and spice and herb accents. The hop profile is subtle with the bitterness of burnt toffee in the aftertaste. Sit back, break out the blue vein cheese, pour yourself one of these and have a moment of quiet and grateful reverence. Oh, and don’t plan on doing anything else for the rest of the day.
